A Little Contracts Exposure Therapy

I'm popping into your inbox briefly today because the sun is out for the first time all week here in Maryland and I plan to enjoy it before the April showers return next week.

Yesterday, my podcast episode with Melanie Padgett Powers, host of the Deliberate Freelancer podcast, came out and can I say that I think it's my best podcast interview to date?

First, Melanie said that I make the law "fascinating." Roll your eyes if you want to, but it's a huge point of pride for me to have someone call something that is usually categorized as boring, cumbersome, overbearing, and/or scary fascinating because of you and the way you talk about it.

So I'm going to take the weekend to pat myself on the back for that accomplishment (and also go to a networking event and try not to be the awkward introvert in the corner).

Thanks to my talk with Melanie, I'm starting to think about my work more and more as a form of exposure therapy where I help folks like you build your capacity to engage with and feel confident managing the law a little bit at a time.

Because in a world where we are taught to fear the law and associate getting it wrong with monumental consequences, most of us are naturally going to tense up when anything law-related comes up in our lives let alone our business.

And from my years of being a wellbeing entrepreneur, I know one of the ways to expand your nervous system's capacity to be with something that makes you feel uncomfortable, scared, or something similar, is to expose yourself to it in small, manageable doses.

My episode with Melanie is all about understanding and negotiating business contracts. It's especially valuable for the freelancers in the house who are B2B (business-to-business) service providers. But even if that's not the nature of your business, I promise you'll learn something.

So, if you want to listen to this episode but you're also really terrified of the law, then just take it in small doses. Maybe try listening to the episode while you go for a walk or listen to it 10 minutes at a time. It's an hour-long episode so perhaps it makes sense to set a goal to listen to it during two 30-minute walks.
